God Bharai Pooja

God Bharai Pooja, also known as the baby shower ceremony in Hindu culture, is a traditional ritual to bless the expectant mother and her unborn child. It is performed in the seventh or eighth month of pregnancy and is known by different names in various parts of India, such as Seemantham, Shaad, and Valakaapu.

Steps and Procedure

  1. Preparation:

    • The house is cleaned and decorated with flowers, mango leaves, and rangoli.
    • The expectant mother is dressed in traditional attire, usually a saree, adorned with jewelry, and flowers in her hair.
  2. Inviting the Deities:

    • The pooja begins with the invocation of Lord Ganesha to remove any obstacles.
    • Kalash (a pot filled with water and topped with a coconut) is placed and worshipped as a representation of all deities.
  3. Main Rituals:

    • Aarti: Aarti is performed to seek blessings from the deities.
    • Blessings from Elders: The expectant mother receives blessings from elders and other women by applying kumkum (vermilion) on her forehead.
    • Offering Fruits and Sweets: Different fruits, sweets, and savories are offered to the expectant mother. She takes a small bite, symbolizing the sharing of happiness.
    • Gift Giving: Family and friends give gifts such as clothes, jewelry, and other items useful for the mother and baby.
    • Bangles Ceremony: In some regions, the expectant mother is adorned with bangles, symbolizing protection and good luck.
  4. Pooja and Havan:

    • A priest conducts the pooja and havan (fire ceremony) to invoke divine blessings for the health and well-being of the mother and child.
    • Special mantras and prayers are chanted during the ceremony.
  5. Feast:

    • A sumptuous meal is prepared and shared among family and friends, signifying celebration and joy.
