Procedure

  1. Bhairav Idol or Picture: A representation of Lord Bhairav is placed on a clean and decorated altar. In some traditions, a Shiva Linga or a Bhairav Yantra may also be used.

  2. Bhairav Mantras and Prayers: Chanting of Bhairav mantras

  3. Offerings:

    • Alcohol: Some traditions offer alcohol such as toddy or wine.
    • Meat: In specific Tantric traditions, meat offerings may be made.
    • Coconut: Considered a sacred offering.
    • Incense, Lamp, and Flowers: To invoke the presence of Lord Bhairav.
  4. Homa (Fire Ritual): In some practices, a fire ritual (homa) may be performed with offerings of ghee, grains, and herbs to invoke Lord Bhairav's blessings.

  5. Tantric Rituals: Advanced practitioners may perform specific Tantric rituals involving mudras (hand gestures), yantras (sacred diagrams), and visualizations.

  6. Aarti: Waving of lamps in front of Lord Bhairav accompanied by devotional songs (bhajans) and prayers.

  7. Prasad Distribution: Distribution of prasad (consecrated food) among devotees after the puja.

Steps to Perform Bhairav Puja

  1. Preparation:

    • Clean the puja area and gather all necessary items including the idol or picture of Lord Bhairav, puja utensils, offerings, and decorations.
  2. Purification (Sankalp):

    • Purify the space, altar, and yourself with holy water or Ganga jal. Declare your intention (sankalp) to perform the puja.
  3. Invocation (Avahan):

    • Begin by invoking Lord Bhairav's presence using prayers and mantras. Visualize him sitting on a throne of tiger skin.
  4. Bhairav Mantra Chanting:

    • Chant Bhairav mantras with devotion and focus, using a mala (rosary) if possible. Repeat the mantra for a significant number of times (e.g., 108 times, 1008 times).
  5. Offerings (Naivedya):

    • Offer alcohol, meat (if applicable), coconut, fruits, sweets, and other items while chanting mantras.
  6. Homa (Fire Ritual) (optional):

    • Perform the fire ritual if included in your tradition, offering ghee, grains, and herbs to the sacred fire while chanting mantras.
  7. Aarti:

    • Perform aarti by waving lamps in a circular motion in front of Lord Bhairav.
  8. Prayers and Bhajans:

    • Sing devotional songs and recite prayers extolling Lord Bhairav's virtues.
  9. Modak Distribution:

    • Distribute prasad to family members and guests as a blessed offering from Lord Bhairav.
