Steps and Procedure for Rudrabhishek

  1. Preparation:

    • Choose an Auspicious Date: Consult with a priest or knowledgeable person to select an auspicious date and time for the Rudrabhishek.
    • Gather Materials: Collect materials such as milk, yogurt, honey, ghee, sugar, water, bilva leaves (bel patra), flowers (especially white flowers like jasmine), sandalwood paste, incense sticks, camphor, fruits, and other offerings.
  2. Setting up the Altar:

    • Clean and Decorate: Prepare a clean and sacred space or altar for the ritual. Decorate it with flowers, rangoli (decorative patterns), and lamps.
    • Place the Shiva Lingam: Install a Shiva Lingam on the altar. The Lingam can be made of stone, crystal, or any other traditional material.
  3. Invocation (Avahanam):

    • Ganesh Pooja: Begin by invoking Lord Ganesha to remove obstacles and ensure a successful ceremony.
    • Kalash Sthapana: Establish a kalash (pot filled with water) with a coconut on top, symbolizing the presence of divine energy.
  4. Sankalp (Resolution):

    • Taking the Sankalp: The main person performing the Rudrabhishek takes a vow (sankalp) stating the purpose of the ritual, seeking blessings from Lord Shiva for peace, prosperity, and removal of obstacles.
  5. Main Ritual:

    • Abhishek (Pouring Offerings):
      • Milk: Pour milk over the Shiva Lingam, symbolizing purity and nourishment.

    • Bilva Leaves: Place bilva leaves (bel patra) on the Shiva Lingam, as they are highly sacred to Lord Shiva.
    • Sandalwood Paste: Apply sandalwood paste on the Lingam.
    • Incense and Camphor: Light incense sticks and camphor, and wave them in front of the Lingam in a circular motion (arati).
    • Flowers: Offer flowers, especially white flowers like jasmine, which are dear to Lord Shiva.
  7. Conclusion:

    • Arati: Perform arati by waving a lit lamp in front of the Shiva Lingam to conclude the ritual.
    • Distribution of Prasad: Offer food, fruits, and sweets to Lord Shiva as prasad. Distribute prasad among family members and devotees present.
