Kharmas, Adhik Maas, and Malmas

-Akanksha Singh

Hindu calendar, explaining the myths and significance of Adhik Maas, Kharmas, and Malmas. By leading millions of people on a spiritual journey through celestial rhythms and symbolic ceremonies, it unveils the cosmic dance of elements and forces that determine auspicious and inauspicious months.

                                             Kharmas, Adhik Maas, and Malmas

Take a mystical tour of the intricate Hindu calendar, where time merges with cosmic energies to create both auspicious and inauspicious months that influence millions of people's spiritual lives. We decipher the mysterious legends and meanings of Kharmas, Adhik Maas, and Malmas in this investigation, unveiling the cosmic dance that governs the tides of life in North India.

Kharmas

Kharmas appears as a celestial performance in the cosmic ballet, taking place twice a year, from mid-December to mid-January and mid-March to mid-April. The fire elements of both the Sun and Sagittarius converge as the sun moves into Sagittarius, releasing a burst of fiery energy throughout the universe.  This convergence, also known as Dhanu Sankranti, marks the inception of Kharmas, a time when the element of fire reaches its zenith.

According to legend, the Sun God encountered a problem during this celestial journey when his thirst-stricken chariot horses came across a pond that was defended by two donkeys called Khars. The Sun God miraculously connected the donkeys to his chariot so that his horses could drink and become less thirsty. As a result, the month gained its name, Kharmas, which bears witness to the cosmic creativity that keeps the universe alive.

Astrologically speaking, this time is not favorable for auspicious tasks due to the Sun's weak position in the sign of Sagittarius, which is ruled by Jupiter. The atmosphere is consumed by the elements' flaming dance, which incites resentment, restlessness, and ideological confrontations. As a result, major purchases, housewarmings, and marriages are considered unlucky during Kharmas.

But in the middle of the cosmic turbulence, there's a bright side. Worshiping the Sun God during this time, chanting mantras, and engaging in rituals to channel the divine energy that permeates the cosmos provide comfort to devotees. Giving gifts—especially water—becomes more prominent as deeds of kindness during Kharmas, giving the cosmic dance a charitable beat.

Adhik Maas

Adhik Maas is the star of the cosmic ballet, a phenomenon that occurs every two to three years. The solar and lunar cycles are harmoniously connected by Adhik Maas, whose roots are in the dance of solar and lunar years.

Purushottam Maas, another name for this remarkable month, reveals a tapestry of piety and spiritual devotion. According to devotees, there are numerous benefits associated with performing charitable deeds, reading holy books, and showing compassion during Adhik Maas. The spiritual landscape is dotted with religious festivals and pilgrimages, which add a divine energy to the atmosphere.

Kharmas, Adhik Maas, and Malmas

Kharmas and Adhik Maas share the stage in the cosmic symphony, each adding their distinct notes to the beat of life. Adhik Maas arranges the solar and lunar cycles in a way that creates a harmonious whole, giving the spiritual path meaning and depth, while Kharmas deconstructs the flamboyant dance of the stars.

Malmas: The Diurnal Silence

Malmas appears as a time of introspection and spiritual cleansing amid the cosmic dance. Malmas is a lunar holiday that falls on a full moon every 2-3 years. It encourages followers to forgo fresh starts and instead concentrate on personal growth.Malmas directs devotees toward charitable deeds, holy recitations, and pilgrimages. He is thought to be unlucky for marriages, housewarmings, and important decisions.

In the maze of time, where the stars dance to the beat of the cosmos, Kharmas, Adhik Maas, and Malmas appear as parts of the Hindu spiritual epic. Every month leads seekers on a path of self-discovery, altruism, and devotion with its own dance of elements and cosmic energies.

The Hindu calendar invites us to welcome the ebb and flow of cosmic energies as we navigate the celestial labyrinth and find meaning in the dance of the elements and the sacred pauses that punctuate our spiritual journey. We see the cosmic dance of fire in Kharmas, the bridging of lunar and solar differences in Adhik Maas, and the lunar pause for introspection and purification in Malmas.
