Dev Diwali

-Akanksha Singh

Varanasi celebrates Dev Diwali, a festival commemorating Lord Shiva's victory over the monster Tripurasura. A spectacular display of lights and cultural diversity is created during the festival, which is commemorated by a holy dip in the Ganges, the burning of innumerable clay lamps, a large Ganga Aarti, cultural events, and a memorial to martyrs.

Dev Diwali - The Festival of Lights in Varanasi

Dev Diwali, also referred to as Dev Deepawali, is a large and significant spiritual event observed in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India. The full moon day of the Hindu month of Kartika, which often falls in November or December, coincides with the event. This festival is very significant because it commemorates Lord Shiva's victory over the demonic Tripurasura, which stands for the victory of good over evil. Deep dedication is shown throughout the celebration of Dev Diwali, and its customs and rituals are breathtaking to witness.

The Importance and Origin

The Shiva Purana, in particular, serves as the foundation for the significance of Dev Diwali in Hindu mythology. Tripurasura, a demon who was Tarakasura's son, is reputed to have terrorised both gods and people on Earth. Three celestial cities called "Tripura" were constructed by Tripurasura. The gods asked Lord Shiva for assistance when they realised how bad the situation was. Tripurantaka, a manifestation of Lord Shiva, decided to take on Tripurasura.

Lord Shiva put an end to Tripurasura's rule by using a single arrow to destroy all three of his towns on the auspicious day of Kartik Purnima. To honour this victory, devotees observe Dev Diwali, also known as Tripurotsav or Tripurari Purnima.
